In the Bag: Cooking the Month of May!
I’m delighted to announce that I’ve teamed up with Cherry from Cherry's English Kitchen and Scott at Real Epicurean for a regular blogging event based around seasonal produce. Each month we will select three seasonal products and put them in a bag for you to create your own dish with. We will be hosting the event in rotation and I’ll be hosting the first one, which will be held in May.
The May bag contains:
Asparagus
Eagerly awaited by foodies all over the country, asparagus is surely the cream of the crop of spring vegetables. English asparagus is considered to be among the best in the world so we are very fortunate to have such easy access to it. The Asparagus season runs from May to June.
Sea Trout
This pink-fleshed fish is full of flavour and in season from March to July.
Spring Onions
These are delicate young onions with a mild flavour. They are perfect raw in salads and are in season from May until September.
Entry Details
Send an email with ‘In the Bag in the subject line to asliceofcherrypie@yahoo.co.uk by Saturday 26th May with the following information:
• your name
• the name of your blog
• a link to your post
• the name of your dish
• a picture of your dish
I’ll post a round up of all entries by Thursday 31st May.
Rules
Here are the rather loose rules - remember the objective is to have fun whilst highlighting seasonal food:
1. Entries must use (or attempt to use) all of the ingredients "in the bag" for that particular month. The dish should be based around the seasonal ingredient, rather then just including it as an afterthought.
2. Participants can include any "extra" ingredients that they see fit.
3. Entries should include a link back to the host for that month, and the post should be tagged "in the bag" and "itb". Use of the "In The Bag" logo is allowed (and encouraged) but not required.
4. Entries can be written any time during the month, as long as the URL is emailed to that month's host before the round up date.
5. Particpants from outside of the UK are most welcome to join in and substitute an item from their own local seasonal produce if necessary.
That's all! Any deviations from the above are at the discretion of the host. Have fun!
"In The Bag" is a food even ran monthly by Real Epicurean, A Slice of Cherry Pie, and Cherry's English Kitchen.

Whoa!!! Like Paper Chef but BETTER!! This looks great -
I think it's a great idea! But my blog is written in spanish. Can I also participate? I'm afraid my english is not so good!
Hi Alanna - Paper Chef? What's that??
Hi Marona - of course you can participate, you are very welcome! The produce is selected from what's in season in the UK but anyone anywhere in the world can join in!
I live in Austria, so I think the seasons are pretty much the same! :)
I'll think what recipe could I cook!
Thank you!
I'm looking forward to it!
Hi, First time here and I have to say this looks like it's going to be an interesting event!
Look forward to it!
Count me in.
I'm curious though -- may I use seafood that's seasonably available locally (in the San Francisco bay area) in place of the sea trout?
Hi Culinarily Curious, absolutely, do substitute for any of your own local seasonal produce. It's great to have you join in the fun!
Hi Julia! I haven't seen you around on any of the other food events so you're certainly diving in feet first here!
Sounds like a great idea though! Paper Chef is similar in that it takes Three Ingredients and a theme that you have to fulfil. I believe it's based on an American TV show called Iron Chef which is a lot of fun!
Hi Freya (and Paul!)
I sure am, aren't I!! The Easter Cake Bake was great fun and I'm really looking forward to this one.
Thanks for the explanation of Paper Chef. This idea was based on Ready, Steady, Cook so does sound similar.
Iron Chef is actually a Japanese show that was a huge hit -- first on American public television and later on the Food Network. An American version soon followed.
It's a little different than what you've proposed. The premise is you have three (or four) "Iron Chefs" -- masters at a particular cuisine (Japanese, French, Chinese & Italian on the original show). Challengers come in from restauratns around the world, and they compete based on a theme ingredient chosen by the host. (e.g.: eggs) All dishes must contain the theme ingredient -- and seek to highlight it.
Your event sounds much more like Ready-Steady-Cook (which was also re-aired on the Food Network way back when... before Emeril became the dominating force)
This is such a great idea, I'm going to get to it straight away!

What a great idea, Julia! Unfortunately, things like asparagus aren't really in season anymore for us over here, as it's coming up to winter. But I look forward to seeing what others come up with!
Hi. I'm a newbie. Great idea. I've submitted a risotto with asparagus, unfortunately asparagus isn't grown in Ireland so we rely on the supermarkets!!:(
