Discovering Pea Shoots

Pea Shoot, Asparagus, Smoked Salmon, Quails Eggs Salad

I’ve been meaning to post about these very lovely green shoots from pea plants ever since I discovered them a month or so ago at a branch of Waitrose. Instantly intrigued I picked up a bag along with some smoked salmon and asparagus for a salad (which I later added some quails eggs to). And I’m so glad I did. It’s quite fascinating; they really do have a distinct taste of sweet peas. They’re delicate and tender and make a lovely change in a salad. I'm looking forward to picking up some more.

Coincidently, the other day I noticed, when reading my favourite blogs in Google Reader, that Hannah from Hannah's Country Kitchen had blogged about pea shoots and is a fan of them. She was urging her readers to try them if they came across them and listed a site completely dedicated to them! Take a look at www.peashoots.com to find out more.

How beautiful! More and more I am discovering how tasty the things that seem like addendum to food actually are. I've discovered beet greens. now pea shoots. lovely.

The manufacturers sent me a parcel of them and I've been experimenting with them too :) How you missed all the posts about them, I don't know ;)

Oh - pea shoots are wonderful and I am so glad that we can get them here now. I had them for the first time in Australia a couple of years ago and they've been on my list of favourites since.

This looks delicious.

They're ridiculously easy to grow. I been had a constant supply growing on my windowsill for months now: http://teach77.wordpress.com/2008/04/20/micro-leaves/
They rarely make it as far as my plate though as I pick and munch all the time!

Sarah Raven is the queen of peashoots, she's been growing eating and talking about them for years. I've eaten hers in a delicious salad, but I'm ashamed to say I've never grown them. On the windowsill sounds good

I've never seen them in Waitrose, good shopping, 10/10 :)

I love pea shoots but never seem to be able to find them. I'll have to venture to a Waitrose. Or grow my own! The salad looks lovely - so summery.

Ok, I have to try them out now. What with my plethora of pea plants, I don't have any excuse, huh? :)

I *love* that first pic!

They are so easy to grow and will do so almost all year long. Broad bean shoots are similarly tasty and can also be grown indoors. Why not experiment?

I also found that my local Waitrose was selling pea shoots! They are super expensive in Chinese restaurants, stir-fried in garlic, but so delicious. You need quite a few bags of Waitrose pea shoots to make a good sized portion..
