Lay the Blanket on the Ground

Summer officially arrived today, for me at least. It wasn’t a scorcher but it was a fair day; the sun seemed rather shy at first, peeking in and out from behind the clouds all morning, but by mid-afternoon it was shining away in the blue sky. But it wasn’t the weather that marked the start of summer for me; it was my first picnic of the year. How I’ve been looking forward to this! Rob and I are taking a nice long break from work and I’ve been watching the weather forecast intently. Today was looking like the first of some increasingly warmer days so, come what may, I was determined that our picnic basket was going to be pulled out and dusted off. It’s a beautiful 4 person hamper, bought for us for our wedding by our friends Vivien and Antony, and I get a real sense of occasion when we use it. Forget warm, soggy sandwiches and plastic beakers, I like a ‘proper’ picnic, with china, glass and cotton napkins. Call me snobbish if you will, but I just love the whole idea of the traditional English picnic. To illustrate the point, one of my favourite literary pieces is not from Austin, Dickens or Bronte, but from Kenneth Grahame. I love the images this extract from ‘The Wind in the Willow’ conjures up:
“’Look here! If you've really nothing else on this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and have a long day of it?'
The Mole waggled his toes from sheer happiness, spread his chest with a sigh of full contentment, and leaned back blissfully into the soft cushions. 'What a day I'm having!' he said. 'Let us start at once!'
'Hold hard a minute, then!' said the Rat. He looped the painter through a ring in his landing-stage, climbed up into his hole above, and reappeared staggering under a fat, wicker luncheon-basket.
'Shove that under your feet,' he observed to the Mole. Then he untied the painter and took the sculls again.
'What's inside it?' asked the Mole, wriggling with curiosity.
'There's cold chicken inside it,' replied the Rat briefly;
'coldtonguecoldhamcoldbeefpickledgherkinssaladfrenchrollscresssandwichespottedmeatgingerbeerlemonadesodawater-'”
For our own little excursion today, Rob and I visited the very picturesque Hever Castle:

After walking around the castle and the grounds we went back to the car for our picnic rug and basket and laid them out on the grass in front of the castle. Out came the little packages: the Parma ham, the cherry tomatoes, the cheeses, the French stick, the strawberries. We had food, we had wine, we had books, we had suntan lotion; we were happy!

We were temporarily joined by one of the inhabitants of the castle grounds, as you can see:
But finding nothing but a few crumbs to peck at off he waddled to the next group of picnic-ers.
We enjoyed the food in the sunshine, then I read while Rob nodded off for a while. Blissful, lazy days!

Well done for picking both a beautiful day and a beautiful place for a picnic! I agree with you about how a picnic should be "a ‘proper’ picnic, with china, glass and cotton napkins." Everything tastes better and looks better.
I've never visited Hever Castle. It really is very picturesque as you say.
Great photos - thanks for sharing.
What a great post! I really enjoyed following your day and I so want a lovely picnic hamper like that! I like the fact that you use proper cutlery and napkins. The only cloud on the horizon for me is that we are fined here if we drink outside and a picnic like that need wine! I wonder how strict they actually are with the rules?
Love the hamper - I have to make do with an MandS cool bag!! Wish I had the day off today, its meant to be getting hotter though so fingers crossed for weekend
Lovely pictures!
Wonderful pictures! I'm sat at the computer in a stuffy office in Central London, but just looking at those pictures transports me to a much nicer place, for a short time anyway!

What a lovely picnic. I have already secretly wanted a wicker hamper like you have...
What a fantastic hamper - just lovely! I love a proper picnic - funnily enough, my next post is of a picnic I enjoyed at the weekend.
I enjoyed that book too - hope you do too.
This is so idyllic, the perfect summer's day! You describe it beautifully with your words and photographs [love the quotes from 'The Wind in the Willow']. And your picnic lunch from your charming picnic basket sounds, and looks, divine!
What a lovely day! I went to a place similar for a picnic last weekend, and you simply cannot beat it. Great food + picturesque setting + good book = my idea of heaven :-)
Your pictures are beautiful!
I love picnics, especially when I pack all my fancy teacups and plates.
The basket you have is adorable, where did you get it?
Oh so great photos!
I love England -and the British for their idiosyncratic behavior!
Great post.
I have added you to my blogroll.
The pictures are beautiful. What a lovely place to picnic.
This Mexican-American domestic goddess yet raging Anglophile absolutely adores your blog. Some of my happiest times have been spent in England. I just wish I were at your picnic. I can have some of your cherries, and you could have some of my salsa fresca . . .
Those are some amazing photos!
pretty book photo!
I swoon with jealousy at your being able to picnic at Hever. I have always loved reading about the Tudors and so the name leaped out at me. It was one of the homes of Anne Boleyn, was it not? See any ghosts?
you take awesome pictures, i especially like the one with the book and sky.
and that's one bad ass picnic basket!!!
I saw your page on the Noted Blogs section! I love it!
You have great photographs and a really cozy appeal for readers. Nice work!

(I love the last one with the book and the sky)
Hi everyone, thanks for all your comments.
The picnic hamper was a wedding gift and it came from John Lewis. They still sell them, just with a slightly different design. www.johnlewis.com
Antonia - I really did enjoy that book and I'm going to buy her next one.
Irene - thanks for the add! I'll add you to mine too.
La traductora - that's a good deal!
Nancy - yes it was her childhood home. I didn't see any ghosts but it was a bit spooky looking at the old torture devices on display :-o
Wow, your pictures are stunning! Do you mind me asking what kind of camera you have? I'm just loving this blog and will be visiting again soon!
I was going to say - I recognise that castle! Although we were there in the depths of winter - far better idea to go in summer with a picnic ;-) Lovely pics. And how sad that we seemed to have lost our sumemr weather somewhere along the way!!
Nice Julia, great food, check my blog guys if you wanna hear about getting in shape
