One Last Summer Fling

Well my friends, the nights are drawing in and the mornings are chillier; summer has its back turned and is on its way home. As a final farewell I made a summery crumble tonight with one of the last punnets of strawberries we'll see for a while.

Summer Crumble

I've never made a crumble with strawberries before and I was very pleasantly surprised by how lovely it was. I added a punnet of blueberries and raspberries, along with some white chocolate for something a little different. It was very sweet - well I did put in a whole bar of white chocolate - but it was most certainly good. The berries melded together wonderfully as they cooked and the whole thing bubbled over with juices. The chocolate would perhaps have been better put in with the topping rather than the fruit, as it disappeared into it as it melted, but it did thicken and sweeten the juices.

Summer Crumble 1

I guess that's it now; summer really is over for another year. It was a rocky one - we had our ups and our downs - but still, it was good, and I have my memories.

I just picked up what I thought might be the last punnets of raspberries and strawberries as well. The crumble looks wonderful. I usually like a crumble with some tart fruit like apples or rhubarb, but looking at your pictures makes me wanna grab my spoon and dig in.

Yumm... this looks great. Berries are one of my favorite things about summer and I hate that we've seen the last of them till next year.

Ummmmmm That looks mouthwatering.

My type of pud,,,only dilema would be to have custard or cream with it.

I have some blueberries leftover from some pancakes at the weekend. I will have to buy some more berries and give it ago.

I have not made any crumbles before so it should be fun.

I'm not ready to give up summer yet since it was 26C yesterday here in K-town. I will have to see what the farmers market brings on Saturday:D

That looks absolutely gorgeous, and it's a creative use of white chocolate. White chocolate and berries are a match made in heaven....
Yes, an uneven summer in the UK, as was that of 2007, the last time I was there. It was so rainy and flooding made all the headlines (and screwed up my plans to visit food-lover's Ludlow), but I loved being there in spite of it.

I'm very much enjoying your blog and hope you'll make some new YouTube vids as well. --Erika in San Francisco, your "YouTube friend and subscriber, 'Mr Pogle' and 'Pippin Pogle' (my significant other chose the names; he grew up watching "Pogle's Wood" in the UK).

It really has turned rather chilly, hasn't it. I may even have to put the heating on!
What a delicious crumble and a fitting way to see off the summer.

Micki - sorry for replying late to this. I'm afraid I didn't make a note of this one but it was really easy, I just put the punnet of strawberries and punnet of blueberries into a dish, scattered over a bar of broken white chocolate, then covered the whole thing in a standard crumble mixture and baked it as you usually would a crumble - like my recipe for crumble here: http://asliceofcherrypie.blogspot.com/2006/10/plum-and-blackberry-crumble.html
