Covent Garden Night Markets

IMG_7859

Last Friday night I headed down to Covent Garden to check out the Night Markets, which are open for the second year running every Thursday and Wednesday night throughout August. Several fellow bloggers were invited to take a look around and it was really great to finally meet the people behind some of the blogs I read.

The market was smaller and with fewer stalls than you may expect, but it made up what it lacked in quantity with quality and variety. It was lively – as you would expect being in a location such as Covent Garden – with a good atmosphere. There’s an entertaining Kitchen Theatre each Friday with a good line-up. On the evening we attended The Hairy Bikers were cooking up a storm. My Mum and her Partner are big fans so I just had to get a book signed, much to the amusement of my fellow bloggers who took some convincing that the autograph wasn’t for me!

This coming Friday, 22nd August, you can be dazzled by Willie Harcourt-Cooze, the modern day Willie Wonka, and on Friday 29th August enjoy some nose to tail eating with Fergus Henderson.

After the show I headed straight for the McManus Oyster stall with Ros and Naimh where we enjoyed bubbly and delicious oysters. I highly recommend this stall, but make sure you get there early; they ran out quickly.

There was lots of tempting hot food on offer such as hog roast, paella, risotto and burgers. And there was plenty of food to take home to enjoy.

Other delights included gorgous iced biscuits and cupcakes from the Lavender Bakery.

Aside from the market there was the usual Covent Garden entertainment which at one point consisted of a near-naked man in hot pink pants getting to grips with a unicycle whilst armed with knives. I kid you not. I'll leave you with that thought. And that image.

I just started blogging about food a few months ago and am looking around at other food blogs to see what's out there. I had no idea parts of the food blogging community were so organized! The cook-offs and other events sound like so much fun!

Are the Night Markets a seasonal thing? How long are they around?

Looks like fun! I really, really wish I lived closer! Is this market going to me an ongoing thing or is it just on for the summer? I use the word summer loosely!

Natalya - the events are great fun. Are you based in the UK? You should join the UK Food Bloggers association - ukfoodbloggersassociation.blogspot.com. The markets are around until end of August.

Joe - here, have a burger!

Molly - thanks :-)

Holler - just through August.

Pinku - thank you!

And thanks everyone else for your comments.

Oh, how I miss Covent Garden, it's one of the spots I always have to visit when I travel to your country (the other 2 being British Museum and Natural History Museum, for different reasons but with the same pleasure).I dropped by because I enjoy cooking and I like to try different things, so I'm always looking for new ideas.:)

OMG I'd love to attend this event. Your photos are tantalizing. I love me a food fair!

The market happens only in August? Okay, then when I plan my trip to London (I'm in Seattle), I'll make sure it's in August.

I didn't know Convent Garden had a seasonal night market, what a great idea. And that unicylist... I swear he's the same guy I saw, on a unicycle wearing only a gold thong/G-string at convent garden about 5 years ago!

I work by Covent Garden and had no idea that event was on, working too hard perhaps!, pity I missed it but I'll be marking it in my diary for next year and from those great photos I'm drooling in anticipation already.
